Boys to Men Mentoring’s (B2M) is making waves with their Summer Surf Nights, designed to prepare enthusiastic participants for the highly anticipated 15th Annual 100 Wave Challenge on September 28th at Mission Beach. Surf nights represent more than just a summer activity for B2M program participants. Surfing provides significant mental health benefits. Research has shown that surfing enhances self-esteem, mitigates social isolation, and serves as a potential remedy for depression and anxiety.
Summer Surf Nights are hosted monthly at beaches countywide, bringing together mentors, staff, community supporters, and program participants for evenings filled with surfing, camaraderie, and personal growth. These events are supported by Degree 33 Surfboards, which provides high-quality surfboards for the boys to use, and PB Surf Shop, whose experienced staff offer valuable surfing lessons and safety tips.
“One of the unique benefits of having a B2M boys 100 Wave Team is the sense of fulfillment they get from raising money for the program that has given them so much. It’s a full-circle experience, transforming them from receivers to givers, enhancing their sense of community and purpose,” said Joe Sigurdson, Co-founder of Boys to Men Mentoring. “But more than that, surfing provides a therapeutic and empowering experience that helps our participants move through their traumas and fears,” he added.
Looking Ahead to the 15th Annual 100 Wave Challenge:
The 100 Wave Challenge, set for September 28th at Mission Beach, is an annual surf-a-thon where participants aim to catch 100 waves in a single day to raise funds for B2M’s mentoring programs. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the event, also known as the crystal anniversary, symbolizing clarity and commitment to B2M’s mission of expanding their in-school mentoring programs to every middle and high school in San Diego County.
“We are incredibly excited for this year’s milestone event,” Sigurdson added. “Our vision for B2M is clearer than ever, and with the support of our community and partners, we are making a lasting impact on the lives of future generations. Fundraisers like the 100 Wave Challenge are crucial to our mission.”
